The first mention of a command tank (char de commandement) was found in a memorandum by General Estienne dated 27.9.1916. The memorandum stated that 50 tanks were to be produced, which were to have a crew of four. They were intended for artillery units. The thickness of the frontal armour was specified, which was to be 15 mm, the armament was to consist of one or two machine guns and a 37 mm gun. The tank was to reach a speed of 10 km/h and was to be able to cross a 1 metre wide trench.
The final form of the command tank using the Schneider CA tank design was completed in 12/1916. Who made the prototype is a matter of conjecture, it is possible that it was some kind of workshop rebuild. The prototype was completed and tested at Champlieu on 26/3/1917. The vehicle bore the designation Schneider CA 2. The tank had a shortened front section and a cylindrical turret was placed in the rear on the ceiling, in which, according to the plans, first a 37 mm, later a 47 mm gun was to be mounted. However, the planned armament was replaced by a machine gun in the prototype. Only one prototype was made, which did not meet General Estienne's ideas for the desired vehicle. The prototype was moved to Trou d'Enfer on 23/5/1917, where it remained until at least 6/1917, when it was again photographed.
