Brief history




Numerous armed conflicts outside and inside the USSR and subsequently the RF, were accompanied by large-scale reprisals by insurgent and guerrilla groups. For example, over 15,000 vehicles were lost during the war in Afghanistan. Tanks and armoured personnel carriers accompanying trucks in columns did not provide sufficient protection.


Therefore, modified trucks began to be used as an additional means of fire protection. Anything at hand was used for armouring: sheet metal, discarded parts from armoured vehicles, fallen tree trunks, sandbags, rails, etc.


Mostly Ural-4320 vehicles were rebuilt in this way, because it was a vehicle with a powerful power unit, higher load capacity and higher ground clearance. These Afghan improvisations also proved beneficial during the Second Chechen War, so the RF automakers resorted to small-scale production for several types of trucks.


The experience proved successful, and later they began to produce armoured truck units that were no longer crafted by craftsmen but in factories. The emergence of armour protection for heavy vehicles of the RF Ministry of Internal Affairs troops is linked to the Second Chechen War. At that time, the need arose for additional armouring of trucks intended for transporting troops in the rear and near-front areas. The Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs commissioned these conversions to its specialized factory NPO STiS of the RF Ministry of Internal Affairs - known as Dmitrov-7.


Between 2000 and 2010, Dimitrov produced over 500 conversions of serial Ural-4320 vehicles. The vehicles were equipped with additional armouring of hoods and cabs, and instead of conventional glazing, toughened glass with gunports was used. A superstructure with armoured walls was placed on the hull. The superstructure could accommodate 16 soldiers with equipment and armament. The side walls reportedly provided sixth degree protection according to GOST 50963-96. Along the perimeter of the superstructure were several large portholes with bulletproof glass above the gunports. In the early versions, the roof was made of plywood, parts of which could be hinged to allow ventilation or firing. On later conversions, the roof was metal with a vent fitted. Entry and exit was possible through a door at the stern.


If necessary, the armoured superstructure could be dismantled and could then be used separately as a control station. The official name was: Ural-4320 Zvezda-V, but the soldiers renamed it "Pokémon".


Later, the Dmitrov plant developed several improved versions, based on the Ural-4320 and Ural-5557 chassis. In recent years, these have not been detachable armoured superstructures, but a total rebuild of the rear hull, which is similar in design to a lightly armoured armoured personnel carrier. Whether these vehicles made it into series production is unclear, but prototypes were shown at the Moscow exhibitions Interpolitech (Interполитех) and Armija (Армия) under several names, for example:
