16-я стрелковая дивизияThe decision to create the 16th Rifle Division was made by the State Committee of Defence of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on 18 December 1941. The division was formed in the Moscow Military District in Balakhna in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The formation was mainly carried out at the expense of refugees and evacuees from Lithuania, as well as fighters and officers of the former 29th Lithuanian Territorial Rifle Corps, deployed during the war in various units of the Red Army, found and transferred to the new division. The core of the division's officers were graduates of the Vilna Infantry School, evacuated to Novokuznetsk in the Kemerovo region (they had undergone abbreviated training). The political personnel were mainly former illegal fighters, party and Soviet workers.
According to the data as of January 1, 1943, out of 10,250 soldiers and officers of the division, 7 thousand were Lithuanians and residents of Lithuania. There were 3,720 Lithuanians (36.3%), 3,064 Russians (29%), 2,973 (29%) Jews and 492 (4.8%) representatives of other nationalities in the division. According to other information, 23.2 percent of the Jews (2,378) fought in the 16th Lithuanian Division. This was the highest number of Jewish soldiers in a single Red Army military unit. Jews made up 13 percent (136 men) of all officers in the division and 34.2 percent in the infantry combat units.
Initially, orders and commands were issued in Lithuanian. However, more than one-third of the soldiers did not speak Lithuanian; the front-line officers and sergeants who were sent to the division to pass on their combat experience were mostly Russians; moreover, in a combat situation, the division's soldiers could be mistaken for the enemy and fired upon because of their lack of knowledge of the language. For these reasons, Russian became the language of orders, commands, and indeed the language of inter-ethnic communication.
The formation and training of the division were completed by February 1943. The division consisted of the 156th, 167th, 249th Rifle Regiments and 224th Artillery Regiment, a Signal Battalion, a Sapper Battalion, an anti-tank detachment, a mortar detachment, a special company for training partisans and scouts for operations in occupied Lithuania, a training battalion, a band and an orchestra. In May 1942, the 2nd Independent Reserve Battalion was formed. The first commander of the division was major-general F. Baltusis-Zhemaytis, after the fighting in the winter of 1943 he was replaced by general-major V. Karvyalis, then general-major A. Urbshas. The division entered the fighting on 21 February 1943 near the town of Alexeyevka, 50 km southeast of Orla, and suffered heavy casualties in the fighting for the town.
In the summer of 1943, the division took part in the Battle of Kursk. In the early days, the unit withstood a strong attack by the German 383rd Infantry and 18th Panzer Division, which was accompanied by an air raid of 120 aircraft. As a result of five attacks during the day, the German troops wedged into the Soviet troops' position, but the counterattack recovered the position and the enemy suffered significant losses.
The division was then assigned to the 4th Shock Army of the Kalininsk Front and took part in the defensive and offensive battles in Belarus. On 27 December 1943, the division received a commendation from the front commander for its combat actions in encircling the enemy's Jezershchev group, breaking through the Germans' fortified defensive line south of Nevel and liberating the town of Gorodok. After the liberation of Polotsk, the division was ordered to march more than 500 km and concentrate near Shiauliai. The division entered the already liberated territory of Lithuania. In mid-August 1944, the division distinguished itself in repelling a counter-offensive at Shiauliai, undertaken by the Germans using up to 800 tanks and assault guns. For exemplary performance of command tasks in battles with German invaders during the breakthrough of enemy defenses northwest and southwest of Shiauliai and for demonstrated bravery and courage, the division was awarded the Order of the Red Banner on 31.10.1944.
In late January 1945, the division took part in an offensive operation to defeat the enemy grouping in the area of Klaipeda, during which it distinguished itself in the attack on Klaipeda on 28 January 1945. To commemorate the victory and for distinguishing itself in the battles during the liberation of Klaipeda, the division was awarded the honorary title "Klajpeda" on 5.4.1945. On 31 January 1945, the division was again ordered to leave for Kuronsk, where it continued to fight German troops during the winter and spring. Still on the morning of 8 May, the last battles took place, and at 12 o'clock in the afternoon the division, together with other Red Army units, accepted the surrender of the German grouping in Kuronsk. In mid-July, the Lithuanian Division made a triumphal march across Lithuania.
After the end of the war, the division was stationed, until its transformation into the 44th Independent Rifle Brigade in 1947, in the Lithuanian capital- Vilnius.
