HMS Ark Royal (1914-1934)

The Royal Navy was the world's first navy to understand the importance of aircraft. Thanks to Corvette Captain Charls Samson, she was the first in the world to test the takeoff of an aircraft from the ship's deck. In 1913, for the needs of military maneuvers, they rebuilt the obsolete cruiser HMS Hermes into an aircraft carrier. The maneuvers have fully demonstrated the benefits of this concept for naval reconnaissance and fire control. Although these modifications were dismantled at HMS Hermes during 1913, the decision was made to build a specialized carrier for aircraft and seaplanes.

This was built by the Blyth Shipbuilding Company from a merchant ship under construction and was delivered to the Navy in 1914. It thus became the first real aircraft carrier in the world. As part of the modifications, the ship received a new propulsion system and more than half of the ship occupied the working deck. It has not yet been primarily intended for landing aircraft. It was previously used for seaplane takeoffs and their lifting using two steam cranes aboard the ship. In addition, the first floatplanes suffered from frequent strength failures, so the ship was also a mobile repair shop. Two classic aircraft and 5 seaplanes were carried on the ship.

It was used in 1915 during the unsuccessful Dardanelles operation. Even then, he remained in the Mediterranean area where he operated until the end of World War I. In 1918, two Sopwith ABC planes bombed SMS Goeben. After World War I, he operated in the Black Sea, where he brought aircraft for the White Guards to Batumi. He later supported troops in the fighting in Somalia against Mad Mullah. After 1920, he returned to Britain and was anchored as a backup vessel. It was reactivated in 1922 and re-operated in the Mediterranean during the Chanak crisis.

In the 1930s, the decision was made to build a new modern aircraft carrier under the name Ark Royal, and so in 1934 it was renamed HMS Pegasus. During World War II, he served only minimally in support and supply tasks. It was sold in 1946 and its reconstruction into the merchant vessel Anita I began. However, in 1948 the reconstruction stopped and the ship was scrapped.
