The AMX-10RC is a wheeled armored vehicle designed to conduct military reconnaissance, and in a secondary role can act as a fire vehicle to destroy enemy armored targets.


It was developed following the French Army's requirements for a new reconnaissance vehicle to replace the Panhard EBR1) machines from the 1970s onwards. The first prototype saw the light of day in 1971, and the vehicles were added to the armament of the reconnaissance regiments of the French army from 1978. The last production machine was delivered in 1987.


The design of the AMX 10RC incorporated many elements from the infantry fighting vehicle AMX-10P. A welded hull is mounted on a three-axle rugged all-wheel drive chassis. The powerplant is an eight-cylinder liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza HS-115 engine with a maximum output of 210 kW at 3,000 rpm. A rarity is the steering of the vehicle, which does not have a steerable axle and skids like a tank.


The main armament is the 105mm F2 cannon, which, together with a 7.62mm F1 machine gun, is mounted in a low, fully rotatable TK 105 turret. Passive protection of the vehicle is provided by four ARF FUM 80 F1 smoke grenades mounted in launchers at the rear of the turret.


The COTAC fire control system includes an M550 laser rangefinder, an M389 panoramic commander's observer, an M504 gunner's sight and a DIVT 13 television system.


The filter-ventilation equipment allows the asset to operate in WMD contaminated environments.


The vehicles were combat deployed in Chad in Operation Manta (1983-1984), during Operation Daguet in 1991 during the Persian Gulf War, and in the 1990s in peacekeeping missions in the Balkans or Ivory Coast, Africa.
