18th Rifle Division

The 18th Rifle Division was formed in Riazan from February to May 1942 as part of the Moscow Military District on the basis of the 16th Engineer Brigade.

By the 10. July 1942, the division was moved to Stalingrad to the reserve of the Stalingrad Front, then it was transferred to the subordination of the 4th Tank Army. On 22 July 1942, the division took the defensive lines, took part in a counterattack, which allowed the remnants of the two Soviet divisions to be extricated from the encirclement. From 3 to 12 August, the division fought heavy battles in the meander of the Don River northwest of Stalingrad. From 15 to 16 August 1942, the division survived heavy defensive fighting and on 17 August 1942 made an unsuccessful counterattack. From 21 August 1942 the division retreated to the northeast, and on 23 September 1942 it was withdrawn to reserve due to heavy casualties.

Later the division participated in breaking the blockade of Leningrad. On 13-14 January 1943, the division broke through to Workers' Settlement No. 5; as a result of this offensive, the division linked up from the east with Leningrad Front troops advancing from the west with Red Army units and broke the blockade ring.

Soldiers of the 18th Rifle Division captured the first example of a German heavy tank Pz.Kpfw VI Tiger.

Later, the formation took part in the Svirsko-Petrozavodsk Offensive. In late September 1944, the unit reached the Soviet-Finnish border southwest of Sortavala. The division was then withdrawn to the front-line reserve and on 15 November 1944 to the reserve of STAVKA, after which it took part in the East Pomeranian Offensive. She was awarded the Order of Kutuzov II Class on 17 May 1945 for the capture of the city and the naval base Gdynia.

After the war, she was stationed on the island of Bornholm, Denmark, as part of the Northern Group of Forces. In June 1946, the division was withdrawn to the European mainland to the Soviet Union and disbanded.
