19th Rifle Division

19-я стрелковая дивизия


It was formed on 21 July 1922 in Tambov from several units of the Moscow Military District as the 19th Rifle Division. On 22 June 1923 it was renamed the 19th Tambov Rifle Division.

In late September 1924, a moth threatened to destroy the winter crops in the districts of Voronezh Gubernia. Conscripts and personnel of the division were sent to fight it, and as a result of their selfless work they saved more than half of the crop. On 2 March 1925, the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee awarded the division the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for its active participation in saving winter crops from agricultural pests in Voronezh Gubernia. It was a rare event when a purely civilian award was given to a military unit.

On 16 June 1925, the division was given the honorary name "Voronezh", with the deletion of the former name "Tambov". In September 1939, the regiments of the division served for the creation of three new divisions: the 120th Rifle Division, the 149th Rifle Division, the 149th Rifle Division, the new 19th Rifle Division was created based on its 55th Rifle Regiment.
