The Brigade was activated in September 1965 to replace the 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, which was operating in the Dominican Republic on a peacekeeping mission. It was scheduled to leave in July 1966, but in May it was decided to deploy to Vietnam. She was airlifted to Vietnam on August 26, 1966.
