Army headquarters was established 30. July 1914 by detaching from the headquarters of the Vilensky military district [1862-1914]. Was in Vilna, from August 1914 in the field, and from February 1918 in Rostov, subject to the command of the Northwest front [1914-1915], from August 1915, the headquarters of the Western front [1915-1918], from April, 1916, the headquarters of the Northern front [1915-1918] from June 1917 the headquarters of the Southwestern front [of 1914-1918], from September 1917 the headquarters of the Northern front [1915-1918], and from February 1918, the headquarters of the Moscow military district [1862-1918].

The headquarters of the army was the DD. march 1918 repealed.
