2. gardová tanková armáda

(2-я гвардейская танковая армия)

The 2nd Guards Tank Army was formed by order of the People's Commissar of Defence of the USSR dated 20 November 1944, No. 0376, by renaming from 2nd Tank Army. From the time of the renaming until 8 January 1945, the army was commanded by its Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Alexey Ivanovich Radziyevsky, as its commander General-Colonel Semyon Ilyich Bogdanov was on 23. July 1944 severely wounded (shoulder shot with joint destruction and shoulder bone split) and was healing from the wound until January 1945. During that time the Chief of Staff Radziyevsky was represented by the Chief of the Army Operations Department Colonel Ilya Nikolayevich Bazanov.

The Army distinguished itself during the Warsaw-Poznan Operation, when on 16 January 1945 it was led into a breakthrough in the 5th Shock Army zone and developed an attack against the towns of Jungbreslau and Kostrzyn nad Odrov. On 28 January 1945, the Army units broke through the Pomeranian Wall on the run. In 15 days, the army covered more than 700 km by constant fighting. The army units were also successful in the East Pomeranian Operation.

On March 19, 1945, the army was withdrawn to the reserve, where it remained until April 24. After replenishment of manpower and equipment, the army was deployed to the final battle of the war - the Berlin Operation. During it, the army distinguished itself by breaking through enemy defenses on the outskirts of Berlin and attacking the city. As recalled by Marshal of Armoured Forces S. I. Bogdanov, shortly after the end of the war he had a conversation with the Supreme Commander during which Stalin told him that before the Berlin operation and the fighting for the Seelow Heights, he considered the 1st Guards Tank Army the best tank army. But after the Berlin operation and after the results of the whole war were summed up, it was the 2nd Guards Tank Army that topped the list of success.

103,352 soldiers of the 2nd Guards Tank Army were awarded ranks and medals for their services during the Great Patriotic War, and 221 of them received the highest decoration - the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

With the end of the war, the army became part of the Group of Soviet Occupation Troops in Germany. The army headquarters was located in Furstenberg. At the end of May 1946, the 2nd Guards Tank Army was renamed 2nd Guards Mechanized Army.
