203mm B-4 howitzer
The B-4 howitzer is a fairly old weapon developed in 1931 and adopted for service in 1934. A modified version (B-4M) with a four-wheeled chassis for easier transport appeared shortly after World War II. The howitzer was mostly assigned to the heavy artillery brigade of the first-line units. The modernized B-4M type was only replaced by self-propelled mortars 2S4 Tulpan.
The B-4 howitzer has a relatively short barrel, only 25 rounds long. Some types were also equipped with muzzle brakes. The howitzer uses split ammunition, the round and shell being transported by a small crane mounted along with the howitzer on a tracked towed chassis.
During long moves, the howitzer barrel was removed and transported separately on a four-wheel chassis along with the chassis. The modernized version had the wheels raised in firing position, the howitzer itself resting on the firing platform.
