The 20-cm-leichter Ladungswerfer was designed by Rheinmetall in the late 1930s and introduced into the Wehrmacht arsenal on 19 April 1941. The weapon did not have a barrel, but a 1,042 mm long, 20 mm hollow pin. The grenade was detonated after it was mounted on top of the pin, its own weight dropping to its base, thus closing the electrical circuit and initiating the fuse. This ignited the ejector and the propellant gases released blew the grenade to a distance of 720 m.
The weapon was intended for use by engineer units to destroy obstacles and lightly fortified points using three-round burst grenades (20-cm-Wurfgranate 40). For clearing minefields or destroying wire roadblocks, a special munition was designed, the so-called harpoon missile (Harpunengeschosse), which pulled a rope with hooks behind it.
