231. infantry division was built in August 1939 in the Nuremberg in Military district XIII of zeměbraneckých units. Subordinate to it was 1. the army, and as its advance, was deployed north of the city Kaiserslautern. In November 1939 she was in subjection Higher headquarters to the specific use of the XXXIV translated into southern Poland, where she worked as an occupying unit.
At the beginning of the western campaign has moved to the military training area Ohrdruff in Thuringia. For the rapid collapse of France didn't get the division the opportunity to deploy, but it was decided on its cancellation. Her units were used for the construction of 11. and 20. panzer division, part of the team over at the sentry units of the prison camps.
