In 1933, the "father" of French tank technology General Jean Baptiste Eugène Estienne was behind the idea of creating a tank fighter using the then-new Hotchkiss SA modèle 34 anti-tank gun. He was considering strengthening the mobile anti-tank protection of infantry units (infantry divisions). He proposed to use for these purposes a quantum of then already obsolete tanks Renault FT-17, whose cannon or machine gun armament was to be replaced by the aforementioned 25 mm cannon, or a competing model of the company APX).
