Nitaka was finished at the end of the Russo-Japanese War and participated as part of the 2nd Fleet in the Battle of Cemulpo Bay and the Battle of the Yellow Sea where she took part in the fight against Ascold. She was one of the ships assigned to Makungu in the Pescadores Islands awaiting the arrival of the Russian Baltic Fleet. She subsequently took part in the Battle of Tsushima. After the war she was assigned to patrol along the Chinese coast, off Manila and off the northern Korean peninsula.
In World War I, she participated in the Battle of Tsingtao and was later assigned to the 3rd Fleet based in Singapore with the task of protecting British shipping around Australia and New Zealand from German attacks. Here she took part in the suppression of an Indian mutiny when part of her Marines were sent ashore. From mid-1915 to 1918 she was stationed off the Cape of Good Hope with her sister ship Tsushima, and together with the British fleet she patrolled the shipping lines between Europe and the East. After the war she participated in the Siberian intervention, especially the landing in Petropavlovsk, and assisted the White Guards in fighting the Bolsheviks.
On 1 September 1921 she was reclassified as a 2nd class coastal protection ship. Her main task was to patrol along the coast of southern China and northern Dutch East Asia. On 26.8.1922 she was sunk by a typhoon off the coast of Karafuto. 284 crew members perished and only 15 were rescued. She was formally decommissioned on 1.8.1924.
