2S5 Hyacinth


The self-propelled cannon 2S5 was developed since December 1968 by the joint efforts of SKB Permsky Engineering Plant and Sverdlovsk Transport Engineering Plant. Serial production began in 1976. 2S5 Hyacinth belongs to a group of self-propelled guns, similar to the American system M107. The hull is protected by armor resistant to conventional small arms and shrapnel grenades. The engine and gearbox are located at the front on the right side of the chassis. On the left is the driver's seat, a little further is the commander's workplace with periscopes, which also operates an anti-aircraft machine gun PKT located on the orbital carriage. There are also spaces for the rest of the crew and ammunition.
Inside the car are transported 30 cartridges and bullets. The missiles are located in the carousel feeder in the rear of the chassis. They are placed in three rows in a row of 10. Between them is a charging device. The 152 mm caliber 2A37 cannon is mounted on the ceiling of the chassis and is protected by a light armor shield. The weapon has a relatively small range of +/- 15 °.
During firing, the rear blade is lowered to stabilize the self-propelled gun. The ammunition consists of a fragmentation-explosive artillery grenade OF-29 weighing 46 kg and a maximum range of 28,500 m, ammunition with additional rocket propulsion has a range of up to 40,000 m. mechanical sight D725-46 with artillery panorama PG-1 M and optical sight OP4M-91 A. The transition from the marching position to the combat takes 3 minutes.


The only foreign user is Finland, which has included 9 specimens in the armament of its army.
