During the retreat fighting in Halych in July 1944, Heavy Tank Fighter Detachment 653 lost most of its Elefants. According to reports on 1 August, the unit had only 12 machines, most of which required extensive repairs. As the decision was made to rearm and retrain the unit on Jagdtigers, the 1st and 3rd Companies were sent to the Fallingbostel training area and the remaining Elefants were received by the 2nd Company. The latter moved to Kraków, where the equipment was to be repaired. The company received two more machines from Austria.
On 19 September 1944, the 2nd Company with 14 combat-capable machines was subordinated to 17th Army with orders to build defensive positions between Kraków and Tarnów. On 15 December it was renamed Heavy Tank Fighter Company 614 of the Ground Forces.
