3. tanková divize [1940-1941]

3rs tank Division
3. tanková divízia
3-я танковая дивизия (3 тд) - I. формирование
The 3rd Panzer Division was formed in July 1940 in the Leningrad Military District. Before the war it was stationed in the vicinity of Pskov and had 338 tanks and 74 armoured cars in its inventory. In early July 1941, it received 10 KV tanks.

During the fighting on the approaches to Novgorod, it clashed for the town of Ostrov with 1. Panzer-Division, which captured the town. Due to the lack of air support and no infantry units, the 3rd Panzer Division lost more than half of its tanks in the counter-attack on the town. By the evening of 05.07.1941, the 3rd td had captured the town, but the next morning another attack was 1. And 6. Panzer-Division again printed.

On 07.07.1941, the 5th Panzer Regiment of the division was sold to the subordination of the 22nd Panzer-Division. Rifle Corps and the 6th Tank Regiment was transferred to the 41st Rifle Corps, effectively making the division virtually non-existent as a tank unit. As of 01.08.1941, only 15 tanks remained in the division's state, and it was used as a rifle unit in subsequent battles.

On 14.12.1941, the division was reformed into the 225th Rifle Division.
