Verstärktes Infanterie-Regiment 638 (französisch)

The Légion des Volontaires Français (LVF), also Infanterie Regiment 638 as it was known to the Germans was formed in July 1941. It was sent to Debica, Poland, for training and remained there until October when it was sent to the Eastern Front to reinforce the 7th Infanterie-Division. After suffering heavy casualties during the Soviet winter offensive, the 2nd Battalion was almost destroyed and the 3rd Battalion was destroyed. Battalion was rebuilt with new volunteers (including 200 coloureds, mostly Arabs from Algeria).

After heavy casualties, its battalions fought independently as single units in anti-Partisan actions. It continued to fight the guerrillas during 1943, but was only used as a unit when all three battalions were attached to 286. Sicherungs-Division.

Merged with the Französische SS-Freiwilligen-Sturmbrigade in September 1944 to form the Waffen-Grenadier Brigade der SS Charlemange.

In 1942 it was requested to make this unit officially French, the Légion Tricolore, but this was not allowed by the Germans who wanted to retain direct control of the unit.
