The Sumo's first foreign voyage was to Manila in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War. She was there to protect Japanese interests and citizens during the uprising. In June and July, Admiral Shimamura Hayao commanded the Japanese Navy from Suma during the Boxer Rebellion during the Japanese occupation of Tianjin.
In the Russo-Japanese War, Suma played an active role in the blockade of Port Arthur and patrolling the lines between Taiwan and China. It was based at Makung in the Pescadores Islands. She was part of the Japanese 3rd Fleet and also participated in the Battle of Tsushima and the capture of Sakhalin.
In World War I, she was assigned to Manila and patrolled the shipping lines between Borneo and the Straits of Malacca. She was later assigned to Singapore and was part of the coastal defences of Australia and New Zealand. After the war, she was reclassified as a 2nd class coastguard ship on 1 September 1921 and decommissioned on 1 April 1923.
