In 1944, a development program for a new medium tank, the 44M Tas (Tas - named after a 9th century Hungarian tribal chief), was started in Hungary. It was supposed to be a modern design, influenced in appearance and design by the German Panther. Despite the inspiration of the German machine, however, it was a different design. The first prototype was to be built of conventional unarmored steel, the second of armored steel. Probably the 1st prototype was fully or only partially completed, but after the Allied air raid of 27 July 1944 on the Weiss Manfred factory it was destroyed. Production of the second prototype was transferred to the Granz plant. There are no reports on the progress of work on this prototype. Serial production has not started. The 44M Tas chassis was used as the basis for the 44M Tas rohamlöveg tank fighter project.
