In 1943, the Panhard 178 tank fighter was created by converting French armored cars into Panhard 178 tank fighters. Instead of the original turret, which was removed, a 5 cm Kw.K. 38 L/42 tank gun was fitted. The gun and crew compartment were protected by a low, simple superstructure that was open at the rear and top. The gun itself was protected by an armoured shield. A small series of these machines were built to provide improvised fire support in reconnaissance units armed with conventional Panhard 178.
