In August 1939, the 3rd Army formed Anti-Tank Troop (Motorized) 521 in East Prussia.
In early April 1940 it was rearmed to 4.7-cm-Pak (t) (three companies of nine) and renamed Tank Fighter Detachment (Motorized) 521.


The squad had the status of Heerestruppe or general staff unit. The (So-called Heerestruppen were not an organic part of a division or brigade, but were assigned through OKH to corps, armies or army groups, which deployed them - as a whole or in parts - according to tactical need).


During the Western Campaign, the detachment was subordinate to Kleist Group, then at the disposal of XXIV Army Corps until September 1941, when it was assigned to 3rd Panzer Division. From late 1941 to June 1942, he served in the 2nd Army.


In June 1942 he was assigned to XVII Army Corps. At that time he had two tank fighter companies Marder (9 each), one company with nine Panzerjäger I and a platoon with two 12.8cm tank fighters Pz.Sfl. V (the only two produced) and one 10.5cm Brummbär.
In January 1943, the detachment, as part of 6th Army, was destroyed in Stalingrad.
