Assault Gun Battery 659 was established on 20 January 1940 in Jüterbog.

In May and June during the western campaign she fought in the XIII Army Corps, first providing support to 17. Infantry Division, with which it crossed the Maas River, then deployed as needed and fought at Laon, Mormelon and Belfort, with the French surrender catching it at the Swiss border.
It remained in France as an occupation unit until the end of February 1941, after which it moved to Jüterbog and prepared for an attack against the Soviet Union.

At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, it supported II Army Corps except in October 1941, when it was temporarily placed at the disposal of I. It took part in the fighting at the Daugava River crossing, fought its way across eastern Lithuania into Latvia and to Lake Ilmen, and fought the [url=/topic/view/173830]Novgorod in August. During the first half of 1942, it supported X Army Corps in the battles of Staraja Russa and the Demänovsk Cauldron. As a result of combat losses, she was withdrawn from the front in June and transferred to the 16th Army reserves.

In early August, the decision was made to disband the battery, with the remaining personnel and equipment being provided to the newly formed Assault Gun Battery 287.
