Battery 665 Assault Gun was established on 30 March 1940 in Jüterbog.

Before the start of the Western Campaign, it moved to Saarbrücken. After the invasion of France, it made its way through the Vosges, where it was deployed in breaking through fortified sections of the defensive lines. She penetrated the Maginot Line between Hambach and Holving and continued towards the Marne-Rhine Water Canal. The French surrender caught the battery in Saverne, Alsace, and it continued to operate in the country as an occupation force. In late July it was transferred to Buchy, northeast of Rouen. In preparation for the invasion of the British Isles, she moved to the coast between Le Havre and Dieppe, where she rehearsed landing operations.

She began the campaign against the Soviet Union as part of XXVIII Army Corps, and fought her way to Lake Ilmen during the summer. From October 1941 until the end of January 1942, she provided support to units of XXXXIth Army Corps (Motorized) in the northern section of the Eastern Front. During the retreat fighting forced by the collapse of supplies in the January frosts (down to -40 degrees), the battery was forced to destroy 6 assault guns, 6 tractors and other equipment due to lack of fuel.
In February, the unit was transferred to LVI. Army Corps (Motorized), and in early March was used to form Assault Gun Detachment 600 as its 2nd Battery.
