According to the original order OKH the Battery of Assault Guns 666 was to be formed by 30 March 1940. As only a limited number of vehicles were available StuG III Ausf. A and these were to be preferably equipped with the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, the date of formation was postponed to 17 June and the achievement of combat readiness to 17 July 1940.
In August 1940, the battery was in Ghent, Belgium, preparing for Operation Lvoun (the invasion of the British Isles), and after its cancellation, moved to Arys Military Training Area in East Prussia.
At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa she supported II Army Corps, from late August to December 1941 she was put at the disposal of I Army Corps.
In late 1942, it was briefly transferred to the reserves of 16th Army during the Battle of the Demänovsky Kotel, and was provided to Assault Gun Detachment 184 as a replacement for the detached 1st Battery (and assumed its designation).
