Thanks to the premature termination of spring fighting in Southern Tyrol and the expulsion of austro-Hungarian forces in Russia the Italians first concentrated their forces in one direction, after a devastating artillery preparation finally conquered Kalvarii and 8. August 1916 occupied the Austrians cleared Gorice (Gorizia). Their advance further east, however, foundered on the austro-Hungarian second line of defense. Attacked also on the plateau of the Karst, where the finally conquered the Monte San Michele and proceeded farther on the Doberdo. The exhausted Austrians eventually Doberdo cleared out and retreated to a defensive line on the northern edge of the Karst. Exhausted, however, there were also Italians, so the battle, considered one of the bloodiest in history, ended. The italians have lost 51 000 men, the Austrians 40 000...

From the memories of the survivor:

...Not only this VI. Italian offensiva (my first), but also other amounted to me the impression that Italy is waging war just so that it seemed that it leads. Shakespeare would say, much ado for nothing. See if become a powerful engine in idle, reminds me of the once warring Italy. A leak at the highest possible pressure, a chimney spewing a lot of smoke and the fireman attaches under the boiler even more coal. Excess steam flows through the valves into the air, a locomotive roars, whistles, hisses, and people and sparrows flee, thinking that the boiler would soon explode. The locomotive, instead of to put in motion full steam and showed his overwhelming power, standing idly still in one place and all for nothing...
