The 701st Naval Air Squadron was formed on 24 May 1939 from the 701st Ejection Squadron. On 07.05.1940 the squadron was reorganized at Donibristle with the task of commanding temporary special purpose units formed on the mainland. The first such unit was a group of 6 aircraft Walrus Mk.I deployed to Norwegian Harstad in late May and early June 1940 (operating from HMS HMS Glorious), in June 1940, the squadron was briefly assigned to HMS Ark Royal, and in October 1940 operated from Iceland (HMS Baidur) in favour of HMS Argus. The guinea was disbanded on 08.06.1941. She was reactivated on 01.10.1942 from a squadron of 700th Squadron stationed in Beirut.
