88. IAP (from 13.4.1944 159th GIAP)
In June 1941, the regiment was based near the town of Vinnica and its pilots flew I-16s over the area that became the operational area of the Southern Front. In July it was withdrawn to Buchonka. It performed combat flights in early 1942 over the Donbas and the northern Caucasus. From August to November, the unit rearmed itself with LaGG-3 fighters. It then operated within the North Caucasus Front and in April 1943 took part in the fighting over Kuban. In the autumn it was based on the Kerch Peninsula, then fought over Crimea as part of the Southwest Front, which was renamed the 4th Ukrainian Front. In May 1944 the regiment was finally rearmed with La-5 fighters and the next month transferred to the 2nd Belorussian Front, where it remained until the end of the war. During the Great Patriotic War, the regiment's pilots won their 268th victory.
