AIM-7C Sparrow III AAM-N-6 Sparrow III
After the Sparrow I missiles ceased production, Raytheon took over the missile production facility, and in the meantime began working on a new version of the Sparrow itself, using a standing-wave radar mode with semi-active target guidance. In 1950, based on the promising results of its Lark missile, Raytheon asked the Navy if the principle of the Lark guidance system could be applied to the Sparrow missile. The Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics agreed, and on June 11, 1951, awarded Raytheon a contract to develop the XAAM-N-6. The initial contract for the production of the missile, named Sparrow III, was awarded on 2 April 1955. However, the Sparrow III did not make it into the arsenal of these aircraft. The first fighter aircraft adapted for their use became the McDonnell F3H-2M Demon. Serial production of the AAM-N-6 missiles began in January 1958, yielding a total of around 2,000 units produced. The missile reached operational capability in the Navy ranks in August 1958. Meanwhile, development work began on a version equipped with an infrared guidance system. The first hit of a test target by such a modified missile occurred on 19 April 1957. The Navy decided not to continue development of this version (primarily because of its low range). The AAM-N-6 Sparrow III was the world's first missile capable of destroying targets beyond the limit of visibility. Like other missiles in the Sparrow family, it was equipped with an Aerojet 1.8KS7800 solid rocket motor. The Mk.38 rod-type warhead had a mass of 29.5 kg. In 1963, the AAM-N-6 Sparrow III was redesignated AIM-7C.
