In 3/1927 a request for a new 8-wheeled armoured car was made by the Reichswehr. The development was first entrusted to Daimler-Benz, later (17/4/1928) also to Magirus and Büssing. The projects bore the codename Mannschaftstransportwagen. Each was to build 2 prototypes. The machines were to be seaworthy. None of the prototypes were completed. They lacked turrets, which were to be developed and manufactured by Rheinmetall. They were to have carried a 37 mm L/45 gun and a coupled machine gun. The weapons were to be aimed at -10° +70°. The crew was to consist of up to 5 persons (driver, commander, two gunners and a radio operator). The machine was to be completed in spring/spring 1928, with testing to take place in 1929. Interestingly, in an effort to save weight (keeping to the weight specification as specified by the customer) the machine used lightweight aluminium alloy wheels.
