The admiralty was the chief administrative authority of the british navy. At its head stood the first lord of the admiralty (First Lord of the Admiralty), who was a member of the government. The office of the lead itself, but as a main member of the Admirální council (Board of Admiralty). Operational control of the navy was in charge of the first sea lord (First Sea Lord), which performed the function of chief of staff of the navy.
