History of the aircraft:
The Aichi Tokei Denki factory, on its own initiative, entered a competition based on the specifications for the 7-Shi deck torpedo bomber. The aircraft bore the factory designation AB-8 (A = Aichi, B = Biplane 8 meant that it was the eighth design). The design work was directed by Ing. Takuichiro Gomei and although the aircraft did not win, it left a very good impression with the naval aviation officials. Ing. Gomei was invited to the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, where he worked on the winning aircraft of the Yokosuka competition B3Y. The Aichi factory was compensated for bearing the cost of developing the AB-8 itself by participating in the production of the B3Y. The aircraft performed better than the competition.
Other participants in the 7-Shi program were Mitsubishi 3MT10, Nakajima B3N1 and Yokosuka B3Y.
