The ship is interesting because it is one of the two civilian ships that the army converted into an aircraft carrier for its airborne operations. The other ship was the Nigitsu Maru, which can be described as the half-sister of the Akitsu Maru. It was created from the passenger ship Akitsu Maru, based on the special requirements of the army. The original design was not significantly changed. The conversion was not extensive, the propulsion units remained original, a flight deck, a hangar and a redesign of the exhaust outlet to the starboard side of the hull were created. The ship had no elevators, the aircraft were moved by crane. A second crane on the starboard side was used for loading/unloading of transported material.
Akitsu Maru served as a support ship in the Army's landing operations, accompanied the invasion fleet and also served partly as a transport ship. She could carry a small number of aircraft or other material.
She was sunk on 15 November 1944 by the American submarine USS Queenfish.
