People's Army (AL)
(People's Army)
A secret military organization of the Polish Workers' Party (Polska Partia Robotnicza PPR), during World War II. It was founded on the authority of a decree of the Provincial National Council on 1 January 1944. Its first commander-in-chief was Michał Żymierski alias "Rola".
AL was formed by renaming the organization People's Guard (Gwardia Ludowa).
The main objectives of the AL were to fight the German occupiers, to carry out anti-German sabotage in favour of the Red Army, but also to cooperate with the Red Army in actions against members of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa AK) and other underground organisations that did not recognise the pro-Soviet government.
