Heeresgruppe B (Army Group B)
1. Biography:
Formed on 12 October 1939 after the renaming of Heeresgruppe Nord, which had been transferred from Poland to the west. Army Group B is the northernmost group during the attack on France and its target is the Netherlands and Belgium. During the second part of the field campaign against France, Heeresgruppe B is deployed as the westernmost group and its section is the area from the canal coast to the Somme River. Its positions thus essentially extend from Paris to the Atlantic.
On 16 August 1940, a transfer to East Prussia follows and it is renamed Heeresgruppe Mitte (Army Group Centre).
It is reconstituted on 9 July 1942 on the Russian Southern Front after being renamed Heeresgruppe Süd (Army Group South). It is the northernmost of the two army groups that take part in the 1942 Summer Offensive, aiming for Stalingrad and the Volga River.
On 21 November 1942, a breakthrough occurs, with the 6th Army and 4th Romanian Army (6. Armee, 4. Rumänische Armee) are closed in Stalingrad. After further Red Army breakthroughs on 14 January 1943, the army group is liberated from encirclement on 9 February 1943, and its remnants are incorporated into Army Groups Centre (Heeresgruppe Mitte) and South (Heeresgruppe Süd).
It is reassembled on 19 July 1943 in Munich and transferred to northern Italy, where it is used on 26 November 1943 in the construction of the headquarters of the High Command South (OB Süd).
It is reassembled on the same day for deployment to the Canal Zone. After the Allied invasion, Heeresgruppe B commands the entire northern flank of the Western Front.
During the Ardennes offensive, Heeresgruppe B commands the central part of the Western Front. He surrenders on 17.4.1945 in Ruhrkessel (Ruhr).
