In 1927 the army air force announced a competition for the successor to the bomber of the Martin NBS-1. Competition in the company Fokker Aircraft Corp., based in newjerseyském Teterboro, which Anthony Fokker founded in 1924 as its american branch under the name Atlantic Aircraft. Unlike the NBS-1 also from competing Keystone LB-1, which were biplanes, visually not very different from the bombers of the Great war, the Fokker XLB-2 was based on the design of the Fokkerova traffic machines F.VII/3m. Wing with a thick profile, it was again from the Fokkerovy the usual plywood, the rear part of the fuselage also did not differ from F.VII. The aircraft was but the only twin-engine, and was powered by engines Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp, fitted under the wings. The bow was released for the bomber. The crew of the total consisted of five men, Who had available five machine guns - double the bow, double on the back and another machine gun firing through the hole in the floor. Could carry up to 931 pounds of bombs. In this form weighed XLB-2 2683 kg and its maximum speed was 186.7 per km/h. The engines were later replaced by two Pratt & Whitney R-1690-1 Hornet, which has had its top speed at 198 km/h. Performances but did not vary much from the normal dvouplošných machines, and the air force was not believed samonosnému the wooden wing XLB-2. To transport the machines have already proved successful, for the soldiers but it was still too radical an idea.
In 1929 Fokker built another one hornoplošný bomber. This machine was based on his american třímotoráku Fokker F.10. The engines were once again the Hornets. This machine did not get žádnné the official designation, only the registration X9165. The army has never been tested, and was soon rebuilt on a standard F.10A.
