Západokorutanské town Raibl (slovenian Rabelj, Italian Cave del Predil) lies at the foot of the mountain Monte Re (1912 m), which is already in 8. century bc. c. was used by local residents as a source of lead and zinc. Commercial mining of these raw materials continued not only in the period of the Roman empire, but also after its termination. 14. century belonged to the territory of Carinthia the austrian Hapsburgs, under whose administration, the local mine became the largest producer of lead and zinc in the Alps.

How often in metalliferous mines the usual, the deeper the mining work progressed, the more complicated the ground water. In the years 1899-1902 was therefore out of the 15. floor of the mine (at a depth of 240 m) penetrated toward the southeast drainage adit with a gradient of 0.2 %, width 2.5 m, height 2 m and length 4 844 m. the Tunnel was passing under the ridge of the Predil Pass (Predelske glave) and doing so the water from the mine into the valley of the river Koritnice, in the stretch between the villages of Mittel Breth and Unter Breth (Gorenji Log and Spodnji Log pod Mangartom). At its grand opening in June of the year 1905 was honored filename: "Auxiliary adit emperor Franz Josef I." (Kaiser Franz Josef I. Hilfsstolen, La galleria di Bretto)...

Due to the fact that every third miner raiblského mine lived in Brethu (Log pod Mangartom), i.e. in places where the tunnel opened, it was decided to use it not only to water drainage, but also to the passage (and in the future even transit) persons. In the following years was because her ceiling is raised to 3.20 m and around the year 1909 was put into operation underground electric narrow-gauge railway, powered by a nearby hydro-power plant Možnica. The track shortened the miners path from the current 12 km walk over a mountain pass at less than 5 km relatively comfortable driving, in addition, without any regard to the weather...

When in may 1915 Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, occupied by the Italian units of the frontier territory and their artillery virtually blocked the key austro-Hungarian supply path leading from the Raiblu through Predilský pass to Brethu and on the Flitsch (Bovec). The austro-Hungarian command has therefore decided to use to supply this important section of the front well of the emperor Franz Joseph I. The military material was in the Raiblu brought mine elevators on the 15th. floor and here translated into wheelchairs that new electric locomotive Siemens-Schuckert (using now instead of a collection of pulleys modern "pantographs") odtahovaly gallery to Brethu. In the same way were also the transport material of a human, then soldiers. They – unlike ammunition and food – in this way (in the case of injury or vacation), sometimes even coming back for more...

This ingenious logistics system to work, while "only" 16 hours a day (at night it was possible to use the road through predilské saddle – in the case of artillery equipment, it was even necessary), yet in the years from 1915 to 1917 transported towards the the front a total of 446 890 soldiers and 240 094 tons of material. In the opposite direction was conveyed approximately 250 000 wounded. Top of use of this traffic route has been achieved in the preparation of the successful austro-Hungarian offensive at Caporetto (Kobarid), when this way was (for to this day "nerozdýchané" ignorance of the Italian command) transported 270 000 austro-Hungarian and German soldiers...

After the first world war fell Raibl (Cave del Predil) in Italy and Breth (Log pod Mangartom) Yugoslavia. Due to the fact that the composition of the staff of the mine remained virtually the same, lived and continue to a third of its workers for (now) yugoslav territory and to work commutes in the usual way. This situation has not changed much even after the second world war, only in the appropriate place drifts was into the wall with a marble plate, indicating the border between Italy and Yugoslavia. Later, it was at this point established the habitat of the Italian financial guard, thus creating probably the only underground border crossing in the world, used not only of yugoslav miners, but reportedly here and there and political refugees from the socialist countries...

In 1991, a few weeks before the announcement of an independent Slovenia, he was mine in Cave del Predil closed. At the time, had his corridor length of approximately 120 kilometers, all the way up from the so-called zero level (foot of the mountain Monte Re) reached a height of 450 m, down a depth of 520 m. the Regular operation of the underground narrow gauge railways (with accumulator locomotives) was terminated and the mouth of the tunnel on the slovenian side was closed. Is only its regular maintenance, which is due to the existence of the Schengen agreement no longer manage without assistance of border authorities. In the Italian Cave del Predil established the mining museum, which also includes a tour of the area ( about 1 600 m) tunnels of Franz Josef I., including jednokilometrové rides electric train....
