Linienschiffsleutnant Gottfried Freiherr von Banfield
* 06. 02. 1890, Castel Nuovo + 23. 09. 1986, Trieste
- Austro-Hungarian naval fighter ace with 9 victories and 11 unconfirmed victories. - Pilot K. and K. Seefliegerkorps - The most successful Austro-Hungarian naval pilot in the First World War, nicknamed [a] "Eagle of Trieste".[/I]
Gottfried von Banfield was born in 1890 in Castel Nuovo in the then Boka Kotorska. His family came from Ireland, his mother was the daughter of the Baron of Mumb Mühlheim. He graduated from military school in St. St. Pölten and at the age of 15 he began studying at the Naval Academy in Fiume ( today Rijeka). On June 17, 1909, he successfully passed the officer's exams. In 1912 he was promoted to Fregattenleutnant. In the summer of the same year, he completed pilot training at the flight school in Wiener Neustadt and received an flight license, as did his older brother, who had already become a well-known pilot. In the autumn, with several pilots from the Austro-Hungarian navy, he was selected to pilot school at the company Donnet-Leveque in France. Lieutenant Jean-Louis Conneau served as a flying teacher here, winning many air races under the pseudonym Beaumont. He was then retrained on seaplanes at Pola Naval Base, St. Catherine's Island. After an emergency landing in 1913, he had a broken right leg. He returned to service at the beginning of World War I.
At the beginning of World War I, he was assigned to the battleship SMS Zrínyi to pilot a two-seater seaplane Lohner E.21. He took part in the first air action against Montenegro. In the following period he worked as a test pilot and instructor at the airport of the naval base Pula on the island of St. Catherine. After the Italians entered the war, a naval air base for seaplanes was built near Trieste. This naval air base was named after its commander Banfield Base and so it was left until the end of the war.
He won his first air battle in June 1915, when he shot down an Italian balloon. He was wounded in an air battle in 1918.
He shot down a total of 9 planes and balloons, another 11 have unconfirmed ( some sources state 15). He made more than 400 combat sorties. It is one of the most successful Austro-Hungarian air fighter aces. He is the best Austro-Hungarian naval aviator. On August 17, 1917, he was awarded the Maria Theresa Military Knights' Order for his military service. He was also the last living knight of this order.
After the First World War, the city of Trieste fell to Italy. Gottfried von Banfield was imprisoned here for some time. In 1920, he emigrated to England with his wife, Count Maria Tripcovich of Trieste, where they acquired British citizenship.
Their son Raphael Douglas was born in 1922, better known as the composer under the name Raffaello de Banfield Tripcovich. In 1926, von Banfield acquired Italian citizenship and returned to Trieste to become director of Diodato Tripcovich and the Trieste-Company, a shipping company he took over from his father-in-law. He became an important representative of the city of Trieste. It is called "Our Baron - El nostro Barone". In 1977, France awarded him the Order of the Legion of Honor. The Trieste Eagle died in Trieste in 1986, at the age of 96.
