ISR/IND - Barak 8

Barak 8
Barrack 8 (Flash)

A medium- and long-range naval anti-aircraft missile system (depending on the missile used). It has been under development since 2006 by IAI (Israel Aerospace Industries) and DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) .

It was primarily developed based on the requirements of the Israeli and Indian navies. Tests were conducted in late 2015 on a Saar 5-class missile corvette and also on the Calcutta-class destroyer . Plans are underway to integrate it onto the Saar 6 corvettes currently under construction. Retrofitting is also likely on Saar 5 corvettes and, according to some sources, on Saar 4.5 missile boats. The Indian Navy plans to integrate the system on Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, Kamorta-class corvettes, Project 17A frigates and aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, besides Kolkata-class destroyers. .

The system includes the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR multifunction surveillance and warning radar with an electronically deflectable beam and 4 fixed antennas.

The basic munition is a two-stage solid propellant rocket with a mass of 275 kg, a length of 4500 mm, a span of 0.75 m, a speed of 680 m/s and an altitude range of 16000 m and a range of 70 km. In the first phase of the flight the rocket is guided by the guidance radar, in the final phase of the flight, after the main engine is disconnected and the second engine is switched on, the rocket is guided by its own radar.

An extended range Barak 8ER missile is under development. The range of the missile is expected to be up to 150 km (other sources put it at 90 km).

In addition to the naval version, a land mobile version has also been developed, referred to as MRSAM (Medium Range Surface to Air Missiles).
