Peasant Battalions
(Peasant Battalions)
A secret military organization of the People's Party (Stronnictwo Ludowe SL) during World War II, founded in August 1940.
In May 1943, the Peasant Battalions BCh signed a merger agreement with the Home Army of the AK, but in fact the full merger did not take place until the end of the German occupation. Out of about 115,000 members, approximately 51,000 BCh soldiers were incorporated into the ranks of the AK.
In 1944, some BCh units, despite orders, submitted to the PKWN (Polish Committee of National Liberation - the provisional pro-Soviet government) government and became part of the People's Army of AL. However, most BCh units remained loyal to the London government. In March 1945, the Peasant Battalions were disbanded.
