First jet aircraft in Canada

The first jet aircraft in Canada was the Meteor Mk.III (EE311). It was flown by ship to Montreal in August 1945, assembled there, and flown to Ottawa by S/Ldr E. L. Beaudoux, who was also the first Canadian graduate of the prestigious Empire Test Pilots' School. Here the aircraft was extensively tested and on 18 September the machine was demonstrated to Aviation Minister Colin Gibson and other politicians. On October 23, the aircraft was piloted by J.A.D. McCurdy, the man who had made the first ever flight in Canada in 1909.

The machine was subsequently extensively tested, including deployment in extreme winter conditions. His career ended in June 1946 when the fuel system failed during a cross-country flight and the pilot, F/Lt William H. McKenzie had to land in the waves of Helen Bay Lake. The aircraft was destroyed and the pilot was not rescued until three weeks later on 25 July 1946.
