Václav Baumann, Air Force Staff Sergeant, RAF Warrant Officer.

Czechoslovak fighter pilot, participant in the offensive over occupied Europe. After his escape to Poland in the summer of 1939, he was no longer able to be transported to France and therefore stayed with the Czechoslovak air group in the camp in Malé Bronowice. After retreating from defeated Poland, he reached Romania and sailed by ship to France via the Middle East. After the surrender, he reached England. After retraining, he was assigned to 245 Squadron stationed in Northern Ireland in September 1940. In January 1942 he was transferred to southern England to 501st Squadron. With 501 Squadron he took part in a number of sorties over the occupied continent and shot down one Bf 109. On 20 June 1942, he did not return from a flight in which he escorted A-20 Boston bombers over Le Havre. His Spitfire Mk. VB, AB 497 was shot down Fw 190 by I/JG 2 and Baumann, seriously injured in the leg, abandoned the burning aircraft. He was captured by German soldiers after hitting the ground. After a two-month stay in hospitals St. Omer and Hohenmark, he was transferred to a prisoner of war camp in August 1942. He gradually passed through Stalag VIII B in Lamsford (from August 1942), Stalag Luft I in Barth (from September 1943), Stalag IV B in Gross Tychau (from November 1943) and Stalag Luft VI in Heidekrug (from February 1944). As a result of the injuries sustained in the shoot-down, it was decided to repatriate him. It took place in July 1944 at Camp Annaburg. In September 1944, he reached Sweden and was taken to England on a ship. Until the end of the war he worked as an instructor in the Czechoslovak Air Depot. He died in Prague in 1989.
