A large number of P-63 Kingcobra machines ready to fly to the USSR under the Lend Lease contract, Buffalo, New York, USA, undated image. The Russian source, below, lists this airfield as the Bell factory airfield in Niagara Falls, summer 1944.
The first two machines in the foreground are indisputably versions of the P-63A-10, as evidenced by the serial numbers on the tail of the aircraft (42-70468 42-70398), as Serial Nos. 42-69975 through 42-70685 belonged to this version. In the Soviet Union, the American serial numbers were not usually painted over, as it was on the basis of these serial numbers that they were used. serial numbers were used to solve e.g. complaints of machines or their parts. The Americans were responsible for the aircraft until the time of their flight to the USSR, so crashed or damaged machines on US territory were replaced by new machines. If the crash occurred already on the territory of the USSR, it was already the responsibility of their new user.
Note the 75 gallon (283 L) auxiliary fuel tanks under the wings of the aircraft. In the Soviet Union, these additional tanks were rarely used, due to the deployment of the machines as frontline fighters. However, flights from the USA to the USSR were not possible without them.
