The M 38 was a further development from a self-loading carbine introduced in small numbers into service with the Italian police in 1935. The author of both weapons was Tullio Marengoni. They were weapons of typical pre-war production with parts produced by chipping, well made and reliable.
The submachine gun has a dynamic unlocked breech with a separate firing pin. The M38 fires from an open bolt and the firing of the cartridge occurs when the bolt reaches the forward position. An interesting feature is the two trigger levers, the front one for firing single shots and the rear one for batch firing. The first series had a barrel stroke compensator, formed by a single hole, and a hinged knife-point bayonet. The second had a jacket encircling the barrel perforated with round holes, and the third was produced without the bayonet and with a new compensator represented by four transverse notches. The sights were adjustable in height on all models. Italian, German, and Allied soldiers rated the weapon highly. In larger quantities, the M38 was exported to Romania and Argentina.

As a result of the growing needs of the Italian army, Beretta designer Tullio Marengoni set about modifying the standardized M38 submachine gun for wartime production conditions. He shortened the barrel and forend, removed the jacket, and replaced it with ribbing along its entire length to preserve the barrel's thermal properties. He replaced the adjustable sights with fixed ones. He reduced the number of chambers of the barrel stroke compensator to two and simplified the breech by using a fixed firing pin.
Later models, designated the M38/44, were made with a smoothbore without ribbing, and post-war also with a stripped and reduced breech and a shorter recoil spring. They were widely exported after the end of the war, mainly to Syria and Pakistan.

Beretta M 38/44
dimensions the same as for 38/42, differ by another solution of the return spring (the protrusion housing nut lacks a protrusion), the barrel has no grooves (fluting)

Beretta M 38/49
dimensions and construction the same as 38/44, differs in the design of the fuse, it is now transversely sliding in the forearm above the arch

Beretta Model 1
experimental design with folding stock and pistol grip, based on Beretta M 38/42, folding stock is the same as for MP 40

Beretta Model 2
looks the same as Model 1, but the design is based on the Beretta M 38/49

Beretta Model 3
it looks the same as the Model 2, has a striker block and no fuse passing through the underbody

Beretta Model 4

The first one is the M 38 version 3 (without the folding bayonet) and the second one is the 38/42 version. Don't be fooled by the descriptions in the Bastogne museum, they are a bit confused.
