At the end of the series Boeingových naval biplane fighters standing Model 236, which is also the last dvouplošníkem developed by the company (with the exception of the division of the Stearman). While there was a biplanes with a later model number, but it was the export version of the already established number P-12/F4B. In addition, it was also the last biplane fighter with fixed landing gear offered by the navy (while F4B-4 was the last i received). Design work on this machine began in 1931, with the basic form of holding to the established tradition, but now in all-metal design. Only the cover of the wings was cloth. The biggest change featured engine - was elected the new Twin Wasp, whose imposition was tested in 1932 at the Boeing 100F, the civilian variant of the P-12 built for the firm of Pratt & Whitney. Completely new was then a massive chassis. The initial order was signed by 30. June 1931, the first take-off, however, performed up to the beginning of the year 1933. Corporate tests continued until April of 1933 and involved several adjustments to the shape of the fairing of the engine, adjustments to the chassis and the pipelines and test a few different propellers including blades. 23. march then was transferred to the navy to Anacostie.

The navy unlike the army still prefer bi-planes with their lower landing speed, XF6B-1 but the performance was just not impressed with, was about 16 km/h faster than the F4B-4, high take-off weight but signed on maneuverability. Thanks to a robust design able to withstand an overload of up to 9 G was but quite suitable for střemhlavému bombing, and in this role was in Anacostia and the u NACA , Langley Field tested even after it was obvious that the new fighter of the US Navy will not. This category after all the navy is very interested in, and a similar fate befell the Curtissův F11C, eventually deployed as a dive bomber BFC-2. 21. march 1934 was renamed and XF6B-1, now bore the designation of the XBFB-1 in the new category of fighter-bombers. Even so coveted order didn't come and the existence of a single prototype was completed in 1936 using as a projectile during the tests the protective barriers on the NAS Norfolk.
