The Bristol Bombay was developed in the mid-1930s as the British counterpart to the German Junkers Ju 52/3m. It was envisaged by the RAF for the same purpose, i.e. steamship transport, transport and ambulance service. The first aircraft were received by 216. squadron in Egypt in March 1939, followed by deliveries to 117., 267. and 271. squadrons. These units operated mainly from airfields in North Africa and used their aircraft to transport British troops, particularly in the first phase of the war in the desert. One machine was involved in the evacuation of the Greek royal family from Crete to Egypt. By the middle of the war, however, the Bombay was replaced by more modern designs, such as the American Dakota.
