122 mm rocket launcher vz. 70

(RM-70)

Mobile reactive artillery weapon on a modified chassis Tatra 813 using the possibility of firing from 40 main volumes. It is designed to conduct concentrated fire on larger areas of the enemy and the destruction of firepower and combat equipment. Shooting can be conducted individually or salvo. Possibility of control from the driver's cab or trench. To build a firing position or a trench to hide, in some types, a hydraulic blade BZ-813 was mounted on the front of the vehicle.

The vehicles were deployed by the Sri Lankan army during the Sri Lankan civil war, the Georgian army during the conflict in South Ossetia in the summer of 2008, and the Nigerian army in the fight against Islamic radicals from Boko Haram.

As of October 31, 1990, there were 456 rocket launchers in the Czechoslovak Army. 70. As of 31 December 1997, a total of 150 of these vehicles remained in the ACR's arsenal. Since the end of 2003, rocket launchers vz. 70 operated by the Czech Army concentrated at 131. and 132. mixed artillery battalion. Each unit had one rocket battery. The vehicle was withdrawn from the ACR armament at the end of 2010. For the last shootings from rocket launchers vz. 70 took place in October of the same year in the Jince Military District.

As part of military aid and commercial contracts, decommissioned vz. 70 rocket launchers from the Czech Republic have been delivered since 2022 to Ukraine, where they were engaged in combat against Russian forces during the Russian-Ukrainian War. By 9 October 2023, 12 rocket launchers originally introduced into the armament of the Czechoslovak People's Army between 1977 and 1985 had been delivered from the Czech Army's stocks. Along with them, 4,900 rockets were delivered. Within the framework of the crowdfunding campaign Gift for Putin named "Rocket launcher Přemysl for the Ukrainian Army and 365 rockets", 50 060 260 CZK were raised by the Czech public for the purchase of one rocket launcher vz. 70 overhauled by STV GROUP and 365 unguided JROF rockets of 122 mm calibre for the Ukrainian Army.

Development of 122 mm rocket launcher vz.70

In 1963 was introduced into the armament of the Soviet Army 122 mm rocket launcher BM-21 GRAD on the vehicle chassis URAL-375D. He was presented to the Czechoslovak delegation during negotiations in Moscow in the early summer of 1964. Immediately after its return, a final report was prepared for the Ministry of National Defense (MNO), in which it was proposed to replace 130 mm RM vz.51 za 122 mm raketomet BM-21 GRAD due to the large range and effect in the target. In 1965, after bilateral negotiations with the Soviet party, the Ministry of Foreign Trade (MZO) obtained a permit for the licensed production of a 122 mm rocket launcher BM-21 GRAD in Czechoslovakia. In April 1966, it was decided to develop and manufacture a rocket launcher for the needs of the Czechoslovak Army. A month later, the MNO submitted its requirements for a 122 mm rocket launcher. They required that the launcher and the magazine for 40 rockets, which was to be designed at the same time as the rocket launcher, be mounted on an armored vehicle TATRA 813 KOLOS. Konstruktta Trenčín was entrusted with development work on the rocket launcher and the construction of the prototype. She developed the supplied technical and production documentation and in the spring of 1967 built a prototype rocket launcher. In the period from September 1967 to December 1969, it was subjected to demanding company and military tests. During them, the prototype traveled more than 25,000 km, fired about 500 rockets, while the charger performed 120 charge cycles without failure. Based on the positive results of the tests, the MNO decided at the beginning of 1970 to introduce a rocket launcher into the ČSĽA armament under the designation 122 mm rocket launcher vz.70 . At the same time, it issued a permit for the production of a 30-piece verification series in the Dubnica nad Váhom Engineering and Metallurgical Plant. Of the first ten manufactured rocket launchers, the first four pieces underwent verification driving, shooting and load tests on the basis of an MNO regulation. These took place from November 1970 to March 1971. In the summer of 1971, tests were carried out with two rocket launchers at the artillery polygon in the USSR. The Soviet military-professional commission highly praised the design of the rocket launcher and recommended the start of serial production as soon as possible. From the end of 1971, the plant in Dubnice nad Váhom, in cooperation with the cooperating plants, started serial production. By 1989, about 430 rocket launchers were produced for the needs of ČSĽA. Organizationally, they formed the armament of rocket divisions of tank and motorized rifle divisions, as well as rocket regiments and brigades of all-army armies.

Among the last users of rocket launchers vz. 70 was Royal Cambodian Army. In the summer of 2008, the territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over the area of the medieval Preah Vihear temple escalated into a series of armed skirmishes between the armed forces of the two states. As a result, Cambodia began purchasing discarded military equipment from Eastern European countries. Among the new additions were also Czechoslovak rocket launchers vz. 70 (delivered from Slovakia). The photos capture the Cambodian vz. 70 during sharp shootings, which took place on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. The fire was conducted at a distance of about 16 km, about 100 missiles were used. The images also show vehicles during recharging T-815 VVN 6x6 .

To sagittarius:
Thanks for the explanation, but they still washed me the difference high between the rocket launcher and the block of rockets in which the new batch is! Isn't there a photo for better understanding?
During charging, the charger is raised to the level of horizontally and rearwardly turned rockets and the rockets are inserted with the nozzle caps - these contain both a touch contact for ignition and serve to prevent moisture from entering the solid propellant. It all takes about 3-4 minutes. When firing, the cap is broken by gas pressure and thrown behind the guns (it is made of bakelite and its debris has a lethal effect up to 25 m, heights up to 50 m). Before firing, it is necessary to just unlock the warhead, i.e. set the immediate or delayed explosion and put on the brake ring - according to the distance to the target. When firing, the rocket is braked by a latch until the engine reaches full thrust and then the car. deleted. The engine burns for 1-2 seconds. After firing the whole salvo - 40 rockets, you can repaint the entire block of missiles and the surrounding area. I served on it for 2 years as a commander and thanks to the heated comfortable cabin of the reliable Tatras and the overall nature of the "combat tactics" it was quite easy. Greetings to the people of 20 years ago from Pilsen-Slovan!

the same applies here as with the 130 mm rocket launcher... the organizational structure changed at different times... I know approximately how the organizational structure of Rmo Roznava looks like as of 1.11.2005 but I can only assume how it looked like e.g. at the time of the division of the republic...

The rmo consists of 5 batteries and a detachment headquarters:
command support battery
reconnaissance battery
1.firing battery
2nd Firing Battery
3.firing battery (stored)

The fire battery is folded:

battery headquarters
command platoon
1st firing platoon (4 rocket launchers)
2nd firing platoon (4 rocket launchers)

composition of rocket launcher crew
Firing squad commander (rocket launcher commander - non-commissioned officer) next to the driver
gunner operator (aimer - corporal) sits behind the rocket launcher commander
the operator (loader - soldier) sits behind the driver
special vehicle driver (driver - corporal)

Thanks.
Three more questions:
do you know anything about rm battery command squad, reconnaissance and support battery, squad command
The rm squad tp on the T-72 had only 18 RM (verified) - so either 2 squads of 3 RM or 3 squads of 2 RM in the battery. Any idea how this could have been?
Are there ammunition vehicles in the squad/battery lineup? Which ones, where and how many?

dosť by pomohlo vedieť k čomu táto inf. bude slúžiť Confused:
s pravdepodobnosťou hraničiacou s istotou to boli v batérii dve palebné čaty po troch raketometoch ....

len približne

veliteľská čata môže byť zložená s :
družstvo zabezpečenia velenia a výpočtu prvkov streľby
spojovacie družstvo
muničné družstvo (2 vozidlá)

prieskumná batéria :
2 prieskumné čaty každá o 3 prieskumných družstvách

BPV:
opravárenská čata
zásobovacia čata
zdravotnícka čata
čata zabezpečenia velenia (spojári a.p.)

velenie oddielu
veliteľ a jeho os. skupina
oddelenia:
s-1 personálne
s-2 prieskum
s-3 výcvik

A to nikomu neprišlo divné prečo majú tie valníky pancierovú kabínu?

P.S.: nejde o nič nové - podobne boli maskované napr. cisternové automobily T-111C a to neboli ani vyvážané.
