Caproni Ca.312 originated in 1938 as the unfolding of the Ca.310 with more powerful engines Piaggio P.XVI. Prototype MM401 flew in Ponte San Pietro in December 1939, piloted by Ettore Wengim. After the completion of the factory tests, the prototype was sent to the testing institute of the Italian air force in Guidonii. The performances were deemed satisfactory and it was therefore ordered 96 pieces, the ministry of aviation, however, decided to prefer Ca.311 and Ca.313 and the order was canceled. Ca.The 312 was offered for export, and 11. April 1939 a contract was signed for delivery of two machines, Ca.312bis the Norwegian air force. Then, in December, was concluded the second contract on license production of Ca.312bis in state aviation factory Hærens Flyvemaskinfabrikk in Kjelleru. The norwegians decided to use Ca.312bis (differing from the two prototypes, which had the same long nose as the Ca.310, rounded glass cabs from Ca.311)as a replacement for the highly troubled Ca.310 and use them as weapons of a new reconnaissance regiment in Kjeviku and Sole. An instant later, an agreement was signed about the delivery of the other 13 machines, but the outbreak of hostilities and the subsequent German occupation of Norway all suspended. All the machines, still located in the factory in Ponte San Petro, have been converted to transport and in June and July 1942, transmitted to the Regia Aeronautica.
Similar figures obtained for the supply of 24 machines which were designed for the belgian air force. These machines are from the Norwegian differed mainly adoptions of broken glass cabin, set on Ca.311M. Again, not a single machine delivered to the customer and instead a decision was made about their conversion to torpedo bombers. It eventually also came together, and between July and October 1941 all the machines taken over the Italian air force and the army and put them to the different units as a transport and connecting.
In addition to these two contracts were also discussed other possible contract - in June 1939 was Ca.312 offered the Bulgarian government, after Denmark, Hungary and finally Switzerland, with engines Hispano-Suiza, no, of course not success..
