Varšava - Vojenský hřbitov Powązki

Cmentarz Wojskowy przy ul. Powązkowskiej
Military cemetery at ul. Powazkowska
(Vojenský hřbitov Powązki)

Visiting this cemetery is in a way like visiting a museum exhibition. I can recommend it to anyone interested in the military history of Poland. Here you will find not only the graves of high generals, but especially over the graves of ordinary soldiers in a beautiful, old cemetery you can recall the history from several uprisings for Polish independence, the Polish-Bolshevik War, World War I and World War II to the harsh present in Iraq. The graves from World War II are divided into the September 1939 campaign and then into all the possible battlefields where Polish soldiers shed their blood. A separate chapter is devoted to graves from the domestic resistance, mainly from the ranks of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa). You will be impressed by the long rows of simple birch crosses of Warsaw insurgents, victims of Katyn massacre and many others.

They really recommend a visit, just a little note at the end.
Many people confuse this military cemetery with its larger civilian namesake (Stare Powązki ul. Powązkowska 14), so for reference the address of the military one is : Cmentarz Wojskowy przy ul. Powązkowska 43/45 and it is two bus stops away (from the centre) from the civilian cemetery.
